Update 1: City of West Torrens – Net zero emissions target
Update 1: Wilberforce Walk
City of West Torrens – Net zero emissions target
Mayor Michael Coxon
City of West Torrens

Dear Mayor Coxon,
RE: City of West Torrens – Net zero emissions target
Thank you in advance for your time in considering my correspondence.
I write to you as a resident of the City of West Torrens who, like so many other residents, have deep concerns regarding how slowly Australia is responding to the threats posed by climate change and the lasting costs that this delay – let alone the delay of other countries – will have upon our local community, Australia, and the world.
I recognise that the Council’s role in this global issue is small, but its decision to act can still be important. Indeed, the Council is to be commended for all its work to date on mitigating and adapting to climate change.
However, I could not locate any evidence of a Council commitment to a net zero emissions target. It is widely understood that there will need to be a global net zero emissions target by at least 2050 – and ideally much sooner – if we are to stave off the very worst impacts from climate change.
May I kindly inquire, has the Council adopted a net zero emissions target, and if so, by what year has that target been set, and what plans have been adopted to reach that target?
If no target has been set, why not, and will you be pursuing the adoption of a net zero emissions target for the City of West Torrens as soon as possible?
Thank you again for your consideration of my correspondence.
Kind regards,
Mr Michael Cornish

RE: Wilberforce Walk shared-use pathway
Firstly, please accept my thanks to the council for undertaking and completing the excellent shared-use pathway and accompanying environmental improvements atop Brownhill Creek along Wilberforce Walk between Anzac Highway and Third Avenue in Forestville.
The shared use pathway has been complete for several months but is still not open to the public.
May I please kindly inquire as to the source of the delay in opening the pathway to the public?
Further, may I inquire as to the Council’s plans – if any – to extend the shared-use pathway and accompanying environmental upgrades alongside the full length of Wilberforce Walk and potentially beyond atop Brownhill Creek to Forestville Reserve?
Might this be something the Council would contemplate as a costed project idea it would furnish to the major political parties in the lead up to the State election, noting that such a project would sit within the marginal State electorate of Badcoe?
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Mr Michael Cornish

Update 6: Aldinga Washpool
Also confirmed through phone call on 12 July 2021 that the current City of Onkaparinga Council position on the Washpool is contained as a motion within the 4 May 2021 minutes of their Strategic Directions Committee, namely, acceptance of the Item 7.4 Washpool Lagoon – Council’s Role report.
Update 4: Aldinga Washpool

Dear Mayor Thompson,
Re: City of Onkaparinga, Aldinga Washpool, and the new Conservation Park
I hope this correspondence finds you well; you would remember me from my time as former Senior Policy Adviser to Ms Rebekha Sharkie MP. Thank you for your own ongoing efforts and support for permanent conservation of the Aldinga Washpool site.
I am writing to you in my personal capacity and out of a keen interest in environmental conservation. The permanent conservation of Aldinga Washpool was an issue I worked upon during my employment with Ms Sharkie, and since then I have been providing advice to the local Washpool Coalition and undertaking my own advocacy on the issue with the State Government.
I too am concerned that there are land parcels at the Aldinga Washpool site that have yet to be confirmed will be a part of the eventual conservation park (as shown in the map at: https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/park-management/aldinga-washpool). These include land parcels which I understand are directly owned by the City of Onkaparinga, or is Crown land under their care, namely:
- D7917 A9
- D6804 A239
- D6326 A116
- H106000 S862
- F10453 A11
May I kindly request an update on whether these parcels are still under Council ownership (and/or care), and whether there is active consideration for their addition to the new Conservation Park?
If so, what is the likely process (such as a vote at Council) and timing for a decision to be made by the City of Onkaparinga?
Thank you again for your support on this issue and for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Cornish

Update: The former Le Cornu site
The former Le-Cornu site

Dear Mr Tsokas
RE: Council green space and former Le-Cornu site
I am a resident of Ashford with a young family adjacent to the border of the City of Unley. With the sale of the former Le Cornu site on Anzac Highway to Kaufland having now fallen through, I write to advocate for the City of Unley to consider turning all or part of that block into a public park.
With increasing urban density in the inner ring of Adelaide – in short, more apartment and townhouse dwellers – outdoor public green spaces are becoming increasingly important. I note that the City of Unley has performed excellently in this regard – according to the 2020 Greener Spaces, Better Places report (‘Where will all the trees be?’) your council has had an impressive 3% increase in green cover from between 2016 to 2020. Under your stewardship, hopefully the City of Unley is willing to continue this excellent trend!
Even a thin sliver of green space at the eastern end of the allotment that also provided north-south access between Leader Street and Maple Street (as currently there is none along the length of the block) would be welcome addition for local residents and workers, making the area more permeable for people on bicycles or on foot.
May I please inquire as to whether the City of Unley has considered purchasing any or all of the site as a public green space, ideally as a park?
In the absence of broader plans, would the City of Unley consider purchasing a small north-south corridor at the eastern end of the allotment to provide at least some green space, as well as access between Maple and Leader streets?
Thank you again for your time and consideration of my letter.
All the best,
Mr Michael Cornish
